“Stop resizing your browser window all the time, you’ll break it!” How many times have you heard that? Okay, maybe you shouldn’t do this very often, but if you develop responsive websites, you know what I’m talking about: with every CSS or DOM it, you’re dragging the ges of the browser window back and forth, testing the changes and seeing if everything works as it should. After all, you’re largely doing this to try to mimic the size of disparate devices’ displays.

If you are involv in development in a larger company, thanks to your colleagues, you can have different types of devices at your disposal, for example, we have iPads, iPods, one or two tablets from another manufacturer, or various laptops and personal computers. If you don’t have that option, you have to use what you have on hand. For example, I have two laptops at home, two different Android devices, a Kindle reader, and a Nexus 7, and while it’s not a complete range of devices, I’ve gotten by with them as a freelance developer. There is no iOS device among them – although I am a fairly quick adopter of new products, I have no intention of buying every new phone, phablet or tablet that comes out.

So, what can a lone developer do? Fortunately, there are more and more browser window tools available that can copy the display sizes of a wide variety of devices, and of course the features and capabilities of these tools vary. I will mention some of them. To test the tools, I use PajamasOnYourFeet.com , the first truly responsive website I’ve built bas on the free Brownie HTML5 templates .
